As the world recovers from the epidemic, people cherish their time with each other more than ever. With the Lunar New Year approaching, Tuán-Yuán is what every Chinese family looks forward to. It is a time when people leave all their work behind and return home to spend the holidays with their families.
SC&T wishes you a Happy Lunar New Year. We will be taking a 10-day break starting on January 20 and will be back in service on January 30.
Chinese Zodiac is similar to astrological signs; 12 Chinese Zodiac animals stand for each year in a cycle, whereas 12 astrological signs correspond to months in a year. The Chinese zodiac signs are the Rat, Ox, Tiger, Rabbit, Dragon, Snake, Horse, Goat, Monkey, Rooster, Dog, and Pig. This year, 2023, is the year belonging to the Rabbit.
People born in the year of the Rabbit (1963/1975/1987/1999) are considered gentle in nature. They are considerate, tolerant, and elegant. Are you also born in the year of the Rabbit?
Lunar New Year is one of the most celebrated days in our culture, and we welcome the arrival of the New Year with our families.
In our culture, we celebrate the year with the sound of firecrackers, wear new clothes for a new spirit of the year, and clean every part of the house to say farewell to the passing year. All of these events represent our expectations for the New Year. Here are some activities people do during the New Year in Taiwan.
Zǒu-Chun, also known as Sīng-Chun, means to go around during the New Year, not only to visit friends and relatives but to go on trips to different attractions.
The most common pastime at family gatherings during the New Year is the game of Mahjong.
The game is so widespread in East Asia, and there is even an American version. A distinction of Taiwanese Mahjong is that players have three more tiles.
In Taiwanese folk beliefs, people ask the god of wealth for fortune during the New Year. Fortune Money is considered a talisman borrowed from the god and will be enshrined on the altar, which people believe will bring wealth to the family. Fortune Money must be returned to the god of wealth at the same time next year. You can see people full of the streets and lanes around the local temples during New Year.
Every year, around January 15 of the lunar calendar, events featuring lanterns are held all over Taiwan to celebrate the Lantern Festival. One of the largest is the Taiwan Lantern Festival. At night, you can see local exhibitions presented with numerous lantern art and generate beautiful, stunning scenes.
